Technology prerequisites

To use Respondus you need each of the following:

  1. a Windows machine with Windows 7, 8 or 10, a Mac with OS 10.10 or later, or an iPad with iOS 10.0 or later (a smartphone is not an alternative).
    • If you use an ipad, you will need to figure out a way to prop it up so that it is steady and the camera has a good view of you.
  2. a webcam and microphone.
  3. reliable internet.

If you have challenges with any of these, let me know well in advance of the test date and we will see what we can work out.

Respondus browser

Respondus provides a special browser that locks out other apps and webpages. The features of the browser include:

  1. Assessments are displayed full-screen and cannot be minimized.
  2. Browser menu and toolbar options are removed, except for Back, Forward, Refresh and Stop.
  3. Access to other applications including messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machines, and remote desktops is prevented.
  4. Printing and screen capture functions are disabled.
  5. Copying and pasting anything to or from an assessment is prevented.
  6. Right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts and task switching are disabled.
  7. An assessment cannot be exited until the student submits it for grading.
  8. Assessments that are set up for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with other browsers.

I have enabled a built-in calculator that you may use if you like.

Respondus set up and practice quiz

The first time you engage with Respondus through Moodle you will be asked to download the browser and install it, but you should not have to do so any subsequent time.

I have created a practice quiz for you to take so you can test out the technology. You may take the practice quiz as many times as you like if you want to experiment with different computers, etc.

Test environment

  1. Your test location should be quiet and free from distraction (to the extent possible).
  2. On your table you will have only a pen/pencil, an eraser, a calculator, and blank sheets of paper on which to write solutions.
  3. You will not be allowed to use other computers, phones, or any other external resources while taking the exam.

Accessing the Test (and the practice quiz)

The exam will be accessed within a Moodle Quiz environment. Just go to our Moodle course and select the appropriate item.

Sumbitting the work you do on paper

When you finish the exam, scan your pencil-and-paper solutions and submit them via Gradescope, just as we have done for homework. A few notes:

  1. Your written work should be submitted as soon as you finish the test.

  2. Be sure to label things clearly.

  3. Use a scanning app rather than plain photos. This works much better for grading and is appreciated.

  4. Be sure to show all of your work. I will make it clear if there are problems that only need an answer in Moodle. Otherwise, assume that work is required and must be shown.
